Two Crucial Questions

Welcome

These two questions are simple, but they deal with the most important issue you will ever face: your eternal destiny. Every person must face death, and what happens afterward matters forever.

As you read and think about these questions, be honest with yourself. Your answers reveal what you are trusting in for your relationship with God and your hope of heaven.

The Two Diagnostic Questions

Question #1

Have you come to the place in your spiritual life where, if you were to die today, you know for sure that you would go to heaven?

Question #2

Supposed you were to die tonight and stand before God, and He were to ask you, . . . ‘Why should I let you into My heaven?’  . . .  what would you say?”

Four Possible Answer Combinations

There are only four possibilities for answers to these two questions. Read each of these combinations below carefully and see which description best matches your own answers.

Answer Combination #1

Question #1: No.
Question #2: Your answer points to things you have done or not done in your life that you hope might make you worthy of getting into heaven.

In this combination, your confidence (or lack of it) is based on your own performance, your behavior, or your religious activity. You are hoping that what you have done will be “good enough” for God.

Answer Combination #2

Question #1: Yes.
Question #2: Your answer points to things you have done in your life that you believe make you worthy of heaven.

In this combination, you feel secure because you believe you have done enough “good” to deserve getting into heaven. Your assurance is rooted in your own efforts and goodness.

Answer Combination #3

Question #1: No.
Question #2: Your answer points to what Jesus has already done for you, and you recognize that your own efforts are not good enough to make you worthy.

In this combination, you understand that Jesus did something on your behalf that you could never do for yourself, and that your only hope of heaven is trusting in Jesus.  But you do not yet have full assurance that you are saved and on your way to heaven.

Answer Combination #4

Question #1: Yes.
Question #2: Your answer points to what Jesus has already done for you, and you are trusting His finished work on the cross, not your own, as the reason God will accept you.

In this combination, your assurance is based on Jesus Christ and His finished work for you. You believe that what He has done is fully sufficient to make you acceptable in God’s sight.

Next Step Based on Your Answers

Take a moment and decide which combination (#1, #2, #3, or #4) best describes your answers.

If your answer combinations were #1 or #2, then the first link below is especially for you: it will take you to a brief video presentation of the Four Spiritual Laws (about 7 minutes), which explains clearly what the Bible says about how a person can know God personally and be sure of eternal life.

If your answers were #3 or #4, then the second link below is for you: it will take you to Lesson 1 in the Basic Bible Studies for New and Growing Christians, designed to help you grow in your understanding and assurance of your relationship with Christ.

In either case, you are invited to download the Free book Christian Doctrine Made Simple, which is a brief suvey of the Core doctrines of the Christian Faith that all forms of true Christian churches believe and teach.
