Marcos of Antioch Launches the Journey

Hermas felt it before he understood it—something shifting at the edges of his life. It wasn’t loud. It wasn’t dramatic. It was a quiet pressure, like a question forming in a room where no one had spoken. What was it . . . ?
He walked the familiar path outside his home, the morning air cool against his face. Nothing looked different. The fields were the same. The sky was the same. The world moved as it always had.
Yet something in it felt unsettled, as if waiting. But waiting for what . . . ?
A breeze moved through the grass, bending it in slow waves. Hermas paused. For a moment, he thought he heard a voice—soft, distant, almost calling his name. He turned, expecting someone behind him.
No one was there. Or was someone there but just invisible . . . ?
He stood still, listening. The feeling didn’t fade. It deepened.
Hermas didn’t know it yet, but this was the beginning of something he could not predict. Something that would test him, unsettle him, and force him to face a question he had avoided for years. A question he didn’t even know he was carrying.
But, before his journey moves forward, another voice steps in. A voice who knows Hermas, but not everything. A voice that can guide, but not answer. A voice that understands the tension he (and, perhaps, you) will face.
Listen to the voice of . . . Marcos of Antioch.

Marcos of Antioch with a Word of Caution | |
Hermas’s journey is not straightforward. It |

does not move in a straight line, and it does not offer quick answers. What he sees will confuse him (and you, perhaps). What he hears will trouble him. And what he must face will not be resolved easily. You will sense the tension early. You will feel the weight of something missing—something Hermas cannot name. Watch for it. It appears slowly and quietly, and it does not announce itself. But once you notice it, you will see it everywhere. I will not tell you what it is. That is for you to discover. See if you can catch it before Hermas does. There is one thing I can say: Hermas’s experiences are symbolic. They are not puzzles to be solved quickly. They are signs, shadows, and echoes of something larger. You will see scenes that feel strange, warnings that feel sharp, and moments that feel unfinished. That is intentional. Hermas will not understand everything he sees. Neither will you—at least not at first. As you read, pay attention to what unsettles him. Pay attention to what repeats. Hear what is unspoken. Pay attention to what he avoids. These are the threads that will lead you forward. Hermas’s path will unfold in movements—first what he sees, then what he must do, and finally what he must understand. But do not rush ahead. Let each part speak in its own time. I will appear again, but not often. My role is not to explain the journey . . . after, not before. It is to help you notice the tension that drives it. The story begins now. Hermas is awakening. Something is stirring. And the missing piece—the one he cannot name—waits just ahead. Walk with him. |
